The winning writers skilfully employ elements of fable, folklore and myth as well as using the theme to comment on human behaviour.
In ‘Gia in the Savanna’ a young giraffe summons up courage to lead animals in a challenge to human hunters.
‘The Three Labradors and the Cruel Sly Cat’ uses the structure of a familiar story and with wit and perception steers it in an unexpected direction.
‘The Conference of the Crows’ has echoes of the traditional ‘The Conference of the Birds’ but in this story the crows are encouraged to use their cleverness to learn how humans write.
‘Running with Wolves’ is an evocative and moving narrative based on the legend of Romulus and Remus and the she-wolf.
