Children and Young people’s Writing Competition

Thanks to everyone who entered. We hope you all continue to write!

We had a high standard of entries. There was an exciting approach to our theme, ‘Adventure’. As ever, it was hard to choose, but here are our winners and commended writers.

1st prize: Olivia Milward: “The Sword of Destiny”

A fiery princess teams up with a fox on a quest for the Sword of Destiny. This is funny, dramatic, action-packed writing.

2nd prize: Laila Raniwala: “Unit 9”

On board an airship, hunting for the Sky Whale was once a way of trying to return to Earth. Moving, meditative writing taps into myth and is strong on atmosphere.

Our Sponsors

Our Aunt, Adrienne Howell, inspired so many people in Mere and beyond with her passion for the written word. She founded the Literary Festival in 1997 to raise money for the Mere and District Link Scheme. Both of these legacies are still going strong today. We are immensely proud of her achievements and to see the festival develop into a wonderful event through the hard work of a dedicated team is a joy.

Adrienne was particularly keen to empower young people to write encouraging the next generation of authors whether they be local, national or international.
